Strawberry and Goat Cheese Toast

Strawberry and Goat Cheese Toast

The tangy taste of goat cheese makes it a terrific complement to fruit and honey. Ripe strawberries are one of the best fruit pairings. Drake Family Farms sets up shop every Sunday morning at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. They produce fantastic artisan goat cheeses, and sell a wide variety of flavors. Be sure to try a sample next time you’re at the market! Let me just take a second to rave about this bread. This walnut raisin loaf from the farmer’s market is slightly sweet and nutty, and the absolute perfect texture to pair with strawberries and cheese. Prep Time: 15 mins Serves: 6-10 Ingredients 6 slices, Walnut Raisin Bread, halved 1/2 pound, Strawberries (~8-10) 3/4 cup, Goat Cheese Honey Preparation Preheat oven to 350F. Toast the slices of bread for 4 minutes. Remove from oven and spread the goat cheese on each slice. Return to the oven and toast for another 3 minutes. Remove the goat cheese-coated toast from the oven and top with strawberry slices. Drizzle with honey to...
Escape to Big Sur

Escape to Big Sur

City living can be tough. It doesn’t take much before simple stressors compound into full-blown anxiety. Thankfully, I’ve come to quickly recognize when I’m in dire need of a weekend getaway. Trips into nature are all the better to cure my urban-dwelling woes.   The natural beauty of the great State of California never ceases to amaze me. We have some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, flanked by majestic Redwood trees.     Here is where I introduce the Rainbow House. I was forewarned by friends that this place is absolutely magical. Turns out, I couldn’t have found a better word to describe it.   There are two houses on the property – the Rainbow and the Dragon House. Each is as quirky, vibrant, and other-worldly as their name suggests. Nestled upon a hilltop amid the Redwood trees, every window, porch, and balcony blurs any illusion of separation from nature.     WiFi connectivity is sparse, water runs slowly, the tub fills even slower, and meals are prepared over a propane stove. There is something about this simple, raw living that slows you down. It allows your thoughts and actions to be more deliberate, more thoughtful, more at peace.     Living in California, it’s pretty difficult to find a reason for not retreating into nature every once in awhile. Big Sur, Joshua Tree, Ojai, and Yosemite are just some of the easily accessible and affordable weekend getaway spots.     So gather up a group of friends, get packing, and hit the road for a restorative retreat into the beautiful outdoors of California!  ...
New Music Monday: September 2014 Playlist

New Music Monday: September 2014 Playlist

September was a month of hotly anticipated releases. Interpol, Banks, SBTRKT, and alt-J each dropped an album. Interpol’s El Pintor is spectacular from start to finish, with the band’s dark yet stylish punk-rock sound firmly rooted in place.   Three standout songs aside, the alt-J album proved to be a bit of a dreary disappointment. It’s lacking in that original, enticing sound from their debut album. Fortunately, there was no shortage of great, new music to quickly move beyond that letdown!   1) Doves (Vince Clarke remix)- Future Islands 2) Same Town, New Story- Interpol 3) Higher- SBTRKT, Raury 4) Fall Over- Banks 5) Lonely Press Play- Damon Albarn 6) I’m Callin’- Tennis 7) Rainy Taxi- Spoon 8) Bloodflood pt. II- alt-J 9) 99- Hollie Cook 10) Left Hand Free- alt-J 11) Dreams- Wet 12) Grizzly Bear- Angus & Julia Stone 13) A Heartbreak- Angus & Julia Stone 14) Nothing Matters- Christian Gregory   Follow me on...
Sweet Potato Fries with Lemon Aioli

Sweet Potato Fries with Lemon Aioli

Sweet, salty, and simply delicious! These sweet potato fries with a side of lemon aioli are just about one of the tastiest complements you can add to a meal.     As you will tell from this post, I’m newly obsessed with a photo editing app, Over, which lets me layer on artsy fonts to my images. This app plus my new iPhone have opened up a whole new window to my food photography experimentation!       You’ve been warned- this lemon aioli is seriously addicting. It takes less than 5 minutes to make and will be gone even faster than that. I suggest making a big batch.     Prep Time: 35 mins Serves: 3-4 Ingredients 2 large Sweet Potatoes, sliced 3 tbsp, Olive Oil 1/4 tsp, Cayenne Pepper 1/4 tsp, Paprika Sea Salt and Black Pepper to taste Lemon Aioli Ingredients 1/2 cup, Mayonaisse 2 tbsp, Lemon Juice 1 tsp, Dijon Mustard 1 tsp, finely grated Lemon Zest 1 clove Garlic, minced Sea Salt and Black Pepper to taste Preparation Preheat oven to 425F. Drizzle olive oil on a large baking sheet before evenly spacing the sliced potatoes on the sheet. Coat the potatoes with the remaining olive oil and season with the cayenne pepper, paprika, sea salt, and black pepper. Bake for 15 minutes before flipping. Bake for another 10 minutes or until golden brown and slightly crispy. To prepare the lemon aioli, combine the mayonnaise, lemon juice and zest, Dijon mustard, and garlic in a small bowl.
